Separate a match from a tournament

A match format describes how a single contest is decided. A tournament format describes how teams progress through an event. A best-of series can appear inside a group stage, a Swiss stage or an elimination bracket.

Understanding that distinction makes schedules much easier to read.

Elimination brackets

In single elimination, a series loss ends a team’s run in that bracket. Double elimination offers another route through a lower bracket after a loss. The exact final structure can vary, so avoid assuming every event uses the same reset or advantage.

Follow the organiser’s published bracket to see the next opponent and what a loss means.

Groups and Swiss stages

A group stage collects results within a defined set of competitors. In a Swiss-style stage, competitors are commonly paired with others on similar records across successive rounds. Qualification thresholds, tie-breakers and rematch rules depend on the event.

Read the event’s explanation before projecting who is through. A familiar format name does not guarantee identical rules.

Three things to check before match day

Check the time zone, the length of the series and the advancement rules. These three details explain when to tune in, how long a contest might last and what is at stake.

If a schedule changes, the official organiser’s announcement should take priority over a cached calendar or an old social post.
